At least six people were injured in a fire that broke out at an industrial compound in Dharavi slum area of Mumbai on Tuesday, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The injured persons were rushed to the nearby civic-run Sion hospital where they were undergoing treatment. Their condition was reported to be stable, the civic body said.

The fire erupted in three-storey and four-storey structures at the Ashok Mill Compound at Kala Qila in Dharavi area at around 3.52 am, the BMC said.

According to the civic body, the injured have been identified as Salman Khan (26), Manoj (26), Amjad (22), Sallauddin (28), Saidul Rehman (26) and Rafiq Ahmed (26).

At least five fire engines and other fire fighting vehicles, including water tankers, were rushed to the spot, the BMC said, adding that efforts were on to douse the blaze.

The fire was confined to wooden material and furniture, among other things, the civic body said.

"The fire was confined to electric wiring, electric installation, garment stock, machinery, furniture, office records and wooden material in partly ground-plus-three floored and partly ground-plus-four floored commercial structures," the civic body said.

The city police, staff of the civic ward, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) and ambulances reached the spot.

The fire was successfully extinguished by 8.10 am.

The cause of the fire was not yet known.
