Mumbai: Shiv Sena, BJP engage in political brawl near Sena Bhavan

Sena and BJP workers clash outside Sena Bhavan in Dadar on Wednesday

Workers from the Shiv Sena and the BJP got into a confrontation in front of the Sena Bhavan in Dadar on Wednesday. The BJP workers had gathered there to protest against Sena leaders’ remarks on the land controversy surrounding the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The police had to resort to force, and detained some people from both sides.

Sena leader Sada Sarvankar alleged that the BJP workers carried stones to pelt at the Sena Bhavan in the afternoon. “We can’t sleep at home when they plan to attack our headquarters,” he said. The BJP side alleged an unprovoked attack from Shiv Sainiks on their female workers. “This is dadagiri by the ruling party. The police should inquire and book the people who attacked our workers,” said opposition leader Pravin Darekar.

The BJP’s youth wing, comprising many female workers, had planned an agitation opposite the friend-turned-foe's ‘sacred’ place. Their ire was against the remarks made in relation to Ayodhya’s proposed Ram temple which is mired in controversy following allegations that the land for the mandir was bought at a price much higher than the market rate.

Wednesday’s street clash is seen as a precursor to the battle between the two local major parties — the Sena and BJP — which will vie for the honours in the municipal corporation polls scheduled for next year.
