Mumbai’s positivity rate jumps past 2 per cent after 10 days

Mumbai’s test positivity rate (TPR) for Covid-19 jumped past 2 per cent after almost a week. The TPR had dropped below 2 per cent on June 28 and was 1.48 per cent on Tuesday. However, it rose to 2.07 per cent on Wednesday.


According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) latest report, the daily Covid-19 cases increased significantly to 664 on Wednesday. It was 453 the day before.



The daily Covid-19 fatalities figure, however, dipped again to single digit. The BMC confirmed nine more deaths; four of these patients had comorbidities, one was in the 40-59 years age group and eight were senior citizens. The last time Mumbai saw daily fatalities in single digit was on June 8.


The doubling rate has been improving consistently and was recorded at 844 days on Wednesday. The recovery rate of infections in the city remained constant at 96 per cent, with 744 more patients being discharged. 

New cases across the state also rose to 9,558 from 8,418 in a day, but the number of casualties dropped by 30 to 147. The state’s case fatality rate rose marginally to 2.2 per cent. A total of 8,899 patients recovered and were discharged on Wednesday. Currently, the state has 1.14 lakh active cases.

The number of fresh cases in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) rose significantly to 2,263 from 1,564 in 24 hours, including the ones reported in the city. Among the regions reporting a high number of cases were Kalyan-Dombivli at 208 and Raigad at 544, highest after Mumbai. Thane reported 151 new cases, Navi Mumbai 157 and Vasai-Virar 93. 

The MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered 32 Covid-19 fatalities, with Raigad reporting the highest tally at 15. Vasai-Virar reported seven deaths and Thane six.
