Mumbai has not only reported a dip in daily infections, but also registered lowest active COVID-19 count on Monday since cases started rising due to the pandemic in April 2020. On Monday, active cases stood at just 1,415, a sharp drop from 1.17 lakh a month ago. On April 14, 2020, the figure was at 1,478.

The pandemic also took a number of lives, bringing the toll from 111 on April 14, 2020, to 16,888 on Monday. However, after the three waves that hit the city severely, the indicators, including active case count, are finally looking up.

During the first wave, almost the entire city was full of containment zones and sealed buildings, and was completely under strict restrictions. The wave peaked on September 18, after Ganeshotsav. The cases then saw a drop, leading to the state government allowing all to travel by local trains in February 2021.

Cases again started to rise with the onset of the second wave, and peaked in April. Even after nine months the active cases in the city remained above 1,600 in December. The third wave, which started in December, saw its peak within two weeks and then cases saw a sharp fall within a month.
