A massive fire broke out in a godown in Sewri area of Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said on Wednesday.

The civic body said that the Mumbai Fire Brigade brought under control the blaze that broke out in the godown no. 5 located at Thokarsingh Shivraj Marg, opposite Swan Mill Compound in Sewri.

According to the BMC, the incident was reported at around 7:48 pm and the fire was successfully extinguished by 9:55 pm.

The officials said that the Mumbai Fire Brigade responded promptly to the call. The incident was reported as a Level II fire.

The fire was confined to an area of approximately 2500 sq.ft on both the loft and ground floor of the godown. The affected area included electric wiring, electric installations, an AC unit, a stock of clothes, sewing machines, cloth painting machines, computers, wooden furniture, and office records.

The civic officials said that the three small hose lines, operated by four motor pumps, were deployed to contain the blaze effectively.

No injuries were so far reported in the incident.

Meanwhile, a massive fire broke out at a furniture-making unit in Nagpur city of Maharashtra on Wednesday evening, officials said. No casualties are reported but property worth crores was gutted, they said.

The blaze erupted in the furniture-making unit located on the Besa-Ghogli road at around 5:30 pm, according to a Fire Brigade official. Three fire tenders have been rushed to the spot. The smoke caused by the fire can be seen from kilometres away, he added.

He said the fire-fighting operation is facing challenges as the blaze is huge and inflammable material is present in the factory. A short circuit might have triggered the blaze, as per preliminary information.

In an another incident, a fire broke out in a furniture manufacturing factory in Bhiwandi in Thane district on Tuesday night, civic officials said, reported news agency PTI.

No one was injured in the blaze which erupted in the furniture manufacturing factory in Bhiwandi's Idgah Road at around 9 pm and efforts were on to douse the flames, they said, reported PTI.
