A 26-year-old man shot dead a woman at point-blank range before killing himself in Malad West on Monday night. Rahul Yadav was apparently upset with Nidhi Mishra's engagement to someone else.

Yadav, who lived at Lalji Pada in Kandivli West, attacked 23-year-old Nidhi, resident of Omkar SRA tower at Kurar, near Ijmima Complex behind Goregaon Sports Club. She worked in the HR department of a company called Sealing solution in Malad.

"While Rahul was in a relationship with Nidhi for the past five years, he was furious after she got engaged to another person on November 30. Nidhi was to get married on May 21," said a source, adding Yadav had also threatened her fiance.

The police said Yadav, who hailed from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, faced nine cases, including attempt to murder. He had spent three months in jail and was out on bail during lockdown. He was back in Mumbai from his hometown on January 3.

Nidhi's colleagues said a man, who they learnt was Yadav after her death, often came to pick Nidhi up from her office and she claimed he was her brother.

On Monday, the police said, Yadav and Nidhi went to Chincholi Bandar where he bought vada pav. The two proceeded toward Ijmima. "They talked and ate the vada pav. Suddenly, Rahul took out a pistol and shot Nidhi in the head. He then fired at his left temple," said an officer. The police suspect Yadav had bought the pistol from UP.

Senior inspector Shobha Pise from Bangur Nagar police station said the bodies have been sent for a post-mortem.
