Chembur cops have booked unknown people for stealing mangalsutra from an Income Tax official's wife when her car was waiting at the traffic signal.

A 57-year-old Income Tax official having a rank of Additional Commissioner in Chennai arrived on December 28 morning with his wife to visit his mother-in-law at Trombay along with his wife. On December 28 morning, the couple arrived at Terminal 2 of Mumbai airport and went to a government guest house.

In the evening at around 7 pm, officials booked a cab to go to Trombay. When both sat inside the car, they could smell cigarette smoke and hence asked the driver to lower the windows of the car. "The officer was sitting on the left side of the rear side while his wife was on the right side. When the car reached Chembur Naka junction it stopped before the signal," said an official from Chembur police station.

Around 7.30 pm when the car was near Santoshi Mata Mandir in front of the Bhojmal building a man came near the car and snatched the mangalsutra from the neck of the Income Tax official's wife and ran away. She shouted for help but the snatcher ran away from the spot. According to the complaint, the mangalsutra weighing 40 grams was worth approximately Rs 1.50 lakh.

"The complainant saw the snatcher wearing a black cap, green shirt, white pant and had a beard and mustache. We have booked unknown persons under IPC section 392 (robbery) and attempts to track the accused is on," said Inspector Sunil Jadhav from Chembur police station.
