In a shocking incident, a 58-year-old watchman died after being knocked down by a car whose driver allegedly stepped on the accelerator instead of hitting the brakes. Police officials said the driver, identified as Manali Bhatia (29), a school teacher, was arrested and later released on bail.

According to a report in Times of India, the alleged incident took place on Wednesday when watchman Dyandev More was opening the gates of a building to let the car in. More worked as a watchman at Gaurav Garden Cooperative Housing Society in Kandivli West.

As soon as he opened the gate, More was flung a few feet away and landed on a parked vehicle. He sustained head injuries and died a few hours later in the hospital. Bhatia was arrested on the charge of causing death by negligence, a police officer said.

Police officials said More, who had previously worked at the same housing complex for two years, had returned a couple of months ago from his village in Satara. More and his family had left for their village last year in March just before the lockdown was announced.

Manohar Shinde, senior inspector at Charkop police station, said, "When More opened the building gate, the car came charging towards him as the driver lost control and hit the gate."

The car has been seized for an inspection which will be conducted by the regional transport office in order to know the possible cause of the mishap, Shinde added.
