Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Makarand Narwekar has urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to install a trash boom at Badhwar Park in Colaba.

Makarand Narwekar, who is the former BJP Corporator from Colaba, recently visited a trash boom installed at the Mithi River in Bandra (East) to see its functioning in removing the floating waste.

After his visit, Narwekar reiterated that the BMC should install a similar trash boom at Badhwar Park in Colaba, which will become India’s first in the Sea.

“It will provide much-needed relief to the citizens and the fishermen community. The trash boom installed at Mithi River has been operational for the past two years. It removes almost 5 tonnes of floating waste daily. It is playing a huge role in the protection of the environment,” he said.

He urged the BMC to install a trash boom at Badhwar Park in Colaba. “The floating waste accumulates along the Badhwar Park seafront. It is causing mosquito menace and creates hurdles for the devotees of Lord Ganesha during the immersion of the idols. Hence, BMC should install the trash boom at Badhwar Park immediately. It will be India’s first trash boom in the sea and provide much-needed help to citizens and the fishermen community in the area,” Narwekar added.

In June, Narwekar had written to the BMC demanding that a trash boom be installed at Badhwar Park, highlighting the serious issues faced by citizens due to the accumulation of floating waste along the Badhwar Park seafront.
