Mumbai: Help pours in as Juma Masjid urges citizens to help victims

Over the past four days, more than 40,000 litres of water and essentials such as food, blankets and utensils have been sent

In their effort to help the victims of Konkan flooding restart their lives, the Juma Masjid of Bombay Trust along with Be Human foundation has urged citizens to donate relief materials. Over the past four days, more than 40,000 litres of water and essentials such as food, blankets and utensils have been sent to a centre in Chiplun from where it will be further distributed among the affected areas.

As of today, a total of seven trucks, each having a capacity of about two tonnes, carried relief materials to the Chiplun centre. Speaking to mid-day, Shoaib Khatib, chairman of the Juma Masjid of Bombay Trust, said, “When our team reached ground zero a few days ago, they reported back to us that everything had been destroyed in the Konkan belt. There has been total loss of life and property. People have no option but to start over. The least we can do is help them restart their lives.” Khatib added that the first truck reached Chiplun four days ago, loaded with clothes, blankets, bed sheets, food, milk, water, soap, utensils, wipers, etc. “Water and milk are the most important as people have absolutely no access to these daily items,” he said.

“Ever since we made an announcement and urged people to come forward and donate relief materials to help the victims, the response has been tremendous. We are receiving a lot of relief material everyday. People come and drop them off at Juma Masjid and we later pack and segregate them, and send them to Konkan in trucks,” said Khatib.

When asked how many more trucks carrying relief material were going to be sent to Konkan, he said, “Two more are scheduled to leave on Monday night. As long as people keep sending relief materials, we will keep the initiative going. Be Human and Juma Masjid of Bombay Trust have also contributed tremendously towards the cause.”

When asked how people could contribute, he said that they could either drop off the material they wish to donate at Juma Masjid or transfer money to their accounts to help in the relief work.
