The Ghatkopar cops have booked a man and three associates of his for abducting his wife and attempting to admit her to a mental asylum at Khalapur against her will. The 37-year-old woman, who managed to escape, complained to the police about the incident. After an initial inquiry, an FIR was registered but no arrests have been made.

According to the FIR, the complainant married for the second time in 2008 after the demise of her husband. After tying the knot, she left for Kuwait with her partner, Saif Mohammed Khan, and lived there for 11 years with her son from her first marriage and a son and daughter from her second marriage. In Kuwait, her husband allegedly abused and beat her up, demanding that she ask her parents for a dowry. In 2019, the family moved back to Mumbai and settled in Colaba.
Eventually, the woman decided to part ways with Khan and filed for divorce at the Bandra family court in November 2020. Since then, the husband allegedly kept threatening the woman to withdraw the divorce application or else he would admit her to a mental asylum. The couple then opted to undergo counselling at the court but this did not yield any results.
At one session on March 18 this year, the counsellor told her to meet Khan with her kids. The family met at a restaurant in a shopping mall in Kurla. “There, her husband again allegedly threatened to take her to a mental asylum and prove she was mentally unstable to get custody of her children if she did not withdraw the divorce application. The woman didn’t budge,” said an officer from Ghatkopar police station.

As they were leaving the mall, Khan allegedly took their 18-year-old son to his car and told him to wait at the entrance. When the complainant walked out of the premises, her husband reached the gate as well and pointed to a person waiting near two ambulances across the road. Two or three people then came running towards her and with the help of her husband dragged her into one of the vehicles.
“I tried to call the police but they snatched my mobile phone from my hand. The two ambulances, followed by my husband’s car, took the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The fleet reached the food mall at Khalapur where the ambulance staff rejected my request to use the toilet,” said the woman in her statement to the police.
“One of the people told me that my husband, his father, brother and step-sister had conspired to lodge me in a mental asylum and that if I didn’t keep quiet, they would use different methods to silence me,” she mentioned.
The vehicles eventually came to a halt at the Yogda Wellness and Rehabilitation Centre and one of the ambulance staffers asked the woman to sign a blank paper. She, however, wrote, “I don’t need any treatment. If forced, I will commit suicide.” She then walked away.
Meanwhile, Khan came with their kids to the centre. After realising his wife had refused to give her consent, he didn’t make a scene and allowed her to return with the children. The woman then wrote a complaint to the Ghatkopar police station.
“An inquiry was conducted on the basis of the complaint and we found it had substance. Evidence was collected, which corroborated the allegation. Hence, the offence has been registered against four persons, including the husband,” said an officer from the Ghatkopar police station.
