A 70-year-old man died and three persons were injured in a fire that broke out on Thursday in a high rise in Mumbai's Borivali area on Thursday, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

According to the civic body, the blaze started in the 22-storey Kanakia Samarpan Tower, close to Magathane metro rail station, at 12:37 pm and was doused at 1:02 pm in an operation helmed by personnel of the Fire Brigade, police and the local BMC ward, while ambulances from the 108 service were kept on stand by.

The fire was confined to electric wiring and cables in the electric duct between the first and 6th floor. Four people were rushed to a private hospital due to suffocation caused by the fire and fumes in the Borivali high-rise building, the civic body said.

An elderly resident died and three others have been undergoing treatment due to suffocation from the smoke in the Borivali high-rise building, according to the civic body.

Those who were admitted to the Apex Hospital in Borivali after suffering from suffocation have been identified as Ranjana Rajput (59), Shivni Rajput (26), and Shobha Savle (70). Mahendra Shah (70) was declared brought dead to the hospital.

In another incident, four people, including a senior citizen, suffered from suffocation due to smoke inhalation after a fire erupted in a 20-storey residential building in suburban Mumbai on Wednesday morning, civic officials said.

The blaze was reported at around 9 am in the building, E High Tower, on SV Road in the western suburb of Jogeshwari. It was confined to electric cables from 15th to 20th floor of the high-rise, an official said.

Two fire engines and other firefighting vehicles were rushed to the spot on receiving a call and the blaze was doused within two hours, he said.

The cause of the fire was not yet known.

Four people, including a 71-year-old man, suffered from suffocation after smoke engulfed the affected floors, and they were immediately rushed to SBS Hospital and KJ Care Hospital in the area, said the official.

The elderly man was discharged after treatment, while the other three were still under medical care and their condition was stated to be stable, he added.
