Wine and more

Here’s some good news for tipplers. The city has got an experience centre for wine lovers and enthusiasts, with the launch of the Wine Park store in Andheri. Founder Vishal Kadakia (inset) told this diarist that the experience centre is an extension of their original venture of selling fine wines from across the globe to five-stars and restaurants in India.

“We deal with small, family-owned producers making small-batch boutique wines. After the pandemic hit, we integrated online. Then, we began thinking why not look at an experience centre, because wine is a very living entity: you need to feel, smell and touch it. So, that’s how this came about,” he shared, adding, “We’re focused on people coming in, experiencing the wines, the cosy space and learning. We’d like to curate some events and masterclasses.” Cheers to that.

A song and dance about East Indians

The East Indian community, not just from India, but also from Oman and New Zealand will come together tomorrow for a competition that celebrates its traditional music. Mumbai-based Elvis Multimedia group is organising it and founder Nelson Patel shared that there are three categories — solo, duet and trio. “We selected 35 people after 71 auditioned,” he added. The prize money is Rs 10,000 for the winners in each category, and you can log on to Elvis Multimedia’s YouTube channel to celebrate the music of a community that is an integral part of the city’s social fabric.

What an idea

Comedian Atul Khatri is wearing his vaccine certificate on his sleeve, quite literally. Tired of having to constantly furnish it at airports and hotels, where it is mandatory, he recently created a special shirt that has the certificate imprinted on it, so that he can bypass the process of having to pull it out constantly while checking in. “Even the certificate started tearing, and then I thought about this T-shirt. There are lots of websites online where you can get whatever you want printed on your T-shirt,” Khatri said about what we feel is a smart move.

An app-t tool for home chefs

“During the last lockdown, we got a lot of phone calls from people asking us about where they could order food from because they can’t even chop an onion. And I realised that information online about cooking is available, but it’s all in scattered parts, whether it’s about chopping onions or getting to know the basics of cooking, or preparing different dishes,” celebrity chef Ajay Chopra told this diarist, adding that this dilemma gave birth to his idea for Cook Academy. It’s an app for amateur cooks where they can pick up all sorts of tips to get them started in the kitchen. There is a section called ‘Ka kha ga’ where the process of home cooking is made simpler, with additional features like international cooking in the pipeline. “There is also an intermediate section called ‘Badte raho’ and an advanced section called ‘Cooking ustad’. The idea is that people who are home-bound should be able to learn cooking in its totality,” Chopra shared. Sounds useful? Head to Google Playstore to download the app.

A postcard for solidarity

There were 16 people jailed in the Bhima Koregaon case from 2018. That number has now been reduced to 15 after Fr Stan Swamy passed away recently. They are languishing in jail as under-trials, and international organisation InSAF India has started an initiative where they are calling on concerned citizens to send postcards to these jailed activists in order to show their support. Those who wish to send a message of solidarity to people including Sudha Bharadwaj and Shoma Sen (in pic) can visit academicfreedomindia.com. “The initiative is also a signal to the authorities that there are people out there who disapprove of the use of unconstitutional laws such as UAPA and sedition laws to suppress dissent,” shared InSAF India member Sruti B.
