The LT Marg police have apprehended two accused for allegedly robbing 170 grams of gold worth R7 lakh from a jewellery store at gunpoint.

The incident occurred on November 9 at Prashant Shaw’s jewellery shop. “I was robbed at gunpoint by one man and he stole the gold after beating me. The other man was standing outside the shop,” said the shop owner while speaking to mid-day. Shaw had approached the police station the same day and had registered an FIR against Rajesh Rai and one unidentified person.

The LT Marg police station then launched a manhunt to apprehend the two accused. One of them, identified as Rajesh Rai, 34, was arrested and brought on transit remand from Madhubani, Bihar, within 72 hours of registering the FIR. During interrogation, Rai allegedly confessed that he was not the only one involved in the crime and Raju Poli, 34, had helped him. Based on these inputs, the police then arrested him from Palghar on Friday.

“Both have a criminal record and we identified them after scrutinising the CCTV footage of the crime scene. We will soon be recovering the gold and the firearm used in the crime,” said an officer with the LT Marg police, on condition of anonymity. The police have booked duo under sections 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 452 (trespassing) and 34 (common Intention) of the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant sections of the Arms Act.
