The Borivli Government Railway Police (GRP) on Thursday cracked a murder case in just four hours, and arrested a 19-year-old youngster for allegedly killing his roommate and throwing him on the rail tracks to make it look like an accident. They have identified the accused as Ashok Mukhiya and the deceased as Ganesh Mukhiya.

Ashok told police that Ganesh had teased him about having an affair with his stepmother and he was frustrated about it, sources told mid-day on Friday. Around 11.30 pm on Thursday, the Borivli GRP received a call from the station master that a man was found dead on the tracks between Borivli and Kandivli. GRP officers reached the spot and found stab wounds on a leg, neck and the chest.

The GRP conducted a panchnama and while making arrangements to transport the body for post-mortem, they heard a mobile phone ringing. They found the phone near the tracks, and answered the call which was from his roommate. With the help of the roommate, police found out the deceased’s name and that he was staying with five others from his village and worked in various eateries in Borivli and Kandivli.

While questioning the five roommates, police learnt that they were all from a village in Madhubani district of Bihar, sources said. They added that Ganesh came to Mumbai a month ago and was staying with Ashok and others at Poisar slum. Police also learnt that a roommate saw Ganesh leaving home with Ashok, but only the latter returned at night. When one of the roommates asked about Ganesh, Ashok said he was leaving for Bihar.

Since Ganesh was new to Mumbai, others got worried and called him to check on him, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sandeep Bhajibhakre. Since coming to Mumbai, Ganesh had been speaking to Ashok’s stepmother on the phone. When Ashok questioned him, Ganesh teased him that he was having an affair with her. Ashok got furious and decided to kill him, said police. On Thursday, he invited Ganesh for a drink near the railway tracks. When Ganesh got drunk, Ashok took a knife out of his pocket and stabbed him. After Ganesh died, Ashok lifted his body and put it on the tracks where a fast goods train crushed him.

Under the supervision of Senior Inspector Anil Kadam, his team solved the murder and took Ashok into custody early Friday morning. “We have arrested Ashok under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC. He was produced before the court that remanded him to police custody till January 31,” said the DCP.
