Mumbai Covid-19 vaccination scam: SIT formed; 7 FIRs registered, 10 accused held

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed by Mumbai police to investigate the fake Covid-19 vaccination scam in the city. The SIT will be headed by DCP Vishal Thakur.


So far, 7 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered and 10 people have been arrested for administering bogus vaccines to around 2,000 citizens across locations like Kandivli, Versova, Khar and Borivli, said police.


Section 308 (attempt to culpable homicide) of the IPC has also been added in all the FIRs registered in this case.


“Seven cases related to fake vaccine scam have been registered in Mumbai. It has been found that people were given the vaccine by mixing saline water,” said Vishwas Nangre Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order).

The first vaccination camp was organized at Hiranandani Heritage Society at Kandivli. After obtaining the relevant vaccination certificate, the residents got suspicious because of the difference of place and time. Following which a case was registered as per the complaint made by the citizens.

The accused had also conducted vaccination campaigns at 9 other different places in Mumbai, added Patil.

According to the information given by Patil, 8 accused have been arrested in the bogus vaccination case at Kandivli.

“So far Rs 12, 40,000 has been confiscated from them. The Toyota car through which the vaccination drive was carried out has also been confiscated. The bank accounts of Mahendra Pratap Singh and Manish Tripathi, the two main accused in the case, have been seized. The owner of Shivam Hospital, Dr. Shivraj Pataria, and his wife Dr. Nita Pataria have also been arrested for carrying out a fake Covid-19 vaccination program,” said Patil.

Singh is the main accused. Sanjay Gupta and Karim Akbar Ali are co-accused in all the cases. Students studying nursing at Shivam Hospital were trained to vaccinate. Chandan Ramsagar also an accused is a data center employee.

"A case of culpable homicide has been registered against this gang," added Patil.
