Mumbai: COVID-19 cases rise again, hit almost 10,000

After a dip in daily COVID-19 cases over the past two days, the city once again reported nearly 10,000 infections on Wednesday. The state also saw 58,952 cases, taking the total tally of Maharashtra to 35.78 lakh. Over the past 24 hours, the state recorded 278 COVID-related deaths, with the death toll hitting 58,804.


While the city saw 9,931 fresh cases, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) recorded 18,676 infections in a single day. The Thane Municipal Corporation area, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivli Corporation area recorded 1,746, 1,259 and 1,382 cases respectively, in the MMR. 


The state’s recovery rate now stands at 81.21 per cent with 39,624 patients discharged on Wednesday. The total number of active COVID-19 patients in the state is 61,20,70. Meanwhile, 2.28 crore laboratory samples have been collected till date since March last year and 35.78 lakh of them have tested positive with a 15.86 per cent positivity rate.


Mumbai’s recovery rate now stands at 81 per cent while the doubling rate is 40 days. The city’s overall growth rate has been steady in the last one week and it currently stands at 1.71 per cent. The total count of positive cases recorded so far is 5.4 lakh and 47.55 lakh tests have been conducted. To the dismay of citizens, the active cases now stand at 87,443 in the city and 9,273 patients were discharged on Wednesday. The mortality rate of the state is steady at around 1.64 per cent despite the increase in deaths. 

According to the state government’s data, there were 278 COVID-related deaths in the state on Wednesday, and the highest number of deaths was recorded in Mumbai (54). Civic officials said that out of the 54 deaths, 33 patients were suffering from other ailments and 37 were senior citizens.

43,234 get their jabs

A total of 43,234 beneficiaries were vaccinated across the city on Wednesday. However, the BMC said that the number includes those inoculated in the second half of Tuesday and first half of Wednesday. Further, there were about four cases of adverse effects.
