The daily COVID-19 cases in the city have almost doubled in just two days. The BMC on Wednesday confirmed 15,166 new infections, up from 8,087 recorded on Monday, after testing 60,014 samples. The test positivity rate (TPR) also jumped to 25 per cent.


The city has already surpassed the figure recorded during the peak of the second wave—11,163, on April 4. The experts said the cases will rise further. On Tuesday, Mumbai’s fresh cases stood at 10,860. Of the 15,166 new patients, 13,195 (87 per cent) are asymptomatic and 1,218 have been hospitalised with 80 on oxygen support, according to the BMC. Out of 22,000 beds, 5,104 beds have been occupied.


The active cases in the city have risen to 61,923. The civic body reported three more deaths to COVID-19. Two patients had comorbidities; two were senior citizens and one was in the 40-59 years age group. The city’s recovery rate dropped to 90 per cent from 97 per cent, and 714 people were discharged on Wednesday. The doubling rate continued to decline, at 89 days.

The state registered 26,538 cases, with 21,738 in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including that from Mumbai. The deaths in the state, however, dropped to eight from 20 on Tuesday. On Tuesday, the state had reported 18,466 cases.

Thane reported 1,851 cases, Navi Mumbai 1,371, Mira Bhayandar 745, Vasai-Virar 541, Kalyan-Dombivli 677, Raigad 327 and Panvel 525. The MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered one death, from Vasai Virar. The state’s case fatality rate remained almost constant at 2.09 per cent, and 5,331 patients were discharged on Wednesday. Currently, the state has 87,505 active cases.

On Wednesday, 144 more patients in the state were found to be infected with the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus, including 100 from Mumbai, 11 from Nagpur, seven each from Thane and Pune city. The rest of the cases were from the interiors of Maharashtra. So far, the state has 797 Omicron cases, out of which 330 have been discharged.
