Mumbai: Cops tell BMC to lay divider on Lower Parel bridge

While demand has come from NM Joshi Marg cops following death of two bikers, traffic police said they, too, will push for it

After the accident on the Lower Parel flyover which claimed the lives of two men, the NM Joshi police have demanded a divider on it as they feel it will help avoid such incidents in future. On the night of September 29, a motorist took a sudden U-turn on the flyover, causing the accident.

The traffic police have said they will also approach the BMC seeking a divider on the flyover.

On September 29 at 10.50pm, the accused Amit Kumar, driving a four wheeler from Dadar towards Worli, took a sudden U-turn on the flyover. This resulted in a biker coming from Worli dashing into his car while another biker was also knocked down. The accident claimed the lives of both the riders of one bike and the rider of the other bike received minor injuries.

‘Incident stresses on need of a divider’

“Everyday many vehicles take such U-turns, but fortunately no such incident has happened. This tragic incident emphasizes the need of a divider on the flyover. After the incident, we wrote to the BMC officials at G/south and requested the divider,” said an officer from NM Joshi Marg police station. Pratap Bhosale, senior inspector at NM Joshi Marg police station said, “We understand the flyover is narrow and it’s impossible to put big dividers, but fibre lane separators can come in handy to avoid any such incident in future.”

Worli traffic officials under whose jurisdiction the flyover comes, will also write to the BMC seeking a divider on the flyover. “We regularly take action against motorists taking sudden U-turns or entering the opposite lane during rush hours. Now, to avoid any untoward incident in future, we are writing to BMC seeking a divider. It will not only bring some order among motorists, but will help us maintain traffic movement,” said Inspector Vijay Hatiskar, In charge of Worli traffic division.
