The Borivli police team probing the human trafficking and fake passport racket involving Bangladesh nationals in Mumbai and Pune have learnt that the point of origin of the scam is Kolkata. After raiding a rented house in West Bengal’s capital, they found a forged birth certificate linked to an individual arrested in Mumbai on October 20.

The Borivali cops revealed that this discovery confirms their suspicions that the criminal network operated in Kolkata, fabricating fake birth certificates for Bangladeshi individuals. Subsequently, these individuals were transported to Mumbai, Palghar or Pune to initiate passport applications based on fraudulent birth certificates and falsified school leaving certificates. Under the guidance of DCP Ajay Kumar Bansal, Senior Inspector Ninad Sawant, Police Inspector Pradeep Kale, PSI Pramod Nimbalkar and their team went to Kolkata.

“The Kolkata address provided by the gang is where their counterparts housed Bangladeshis after their border crossing. It was subjected to a raid on Saturday. This operation yielded numerous counterfeit birth certificates, including one pertaining to a previously apprehended accused Mobin Mandal. Leave and licence agreements and passbooks of two nationalised banks were also recovered,” said an officer from the Borivli police station.

Sequence of events

Officials said that the Bangladeshi nationals, aspiring to travel abroad, were first accommodated in rented apartments in Kolkata. There, the criminal gang facilitated the creation of fake birth certificates and school leaving certificates. After receiving these forged documents, the Bangladeshis were dispatched to Mumbai or Pune. “Their passport applications were supported by fabricated rent agreements and birth certificates, falsely asserting their Indian citizens
