Mumbai: CM Uddhav Thackeray reviews BMC's monsoon preparation

The nullah-cleaning work will start this month, said civic officials

Even as COVID-19 cases are on the rise, the city is also preparing for the monsoon. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray took a review of the works being carried out by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) before the onset of the monsoon on Friday.

The CM insisted that those who throw debris in nullahs be warned and that all work should be completed before May 31. The BMC said that the work is on in full swing. Last year, a total of 5,04,125 metric tonnes of silt was removed from rivers and nullahs in Mumbai. This year, the target is to remove 6,85,358 metric tonnes of silt—an increase by about 35 per cent.

Every year, water accumulates in the low lying areas of Hindmata and Gandhi Market and the BMC has constructed large underground tanks. If rainwater starts flooding these low lying areas, it will be released in these tanks.
