The civic body has been busy preparing for the monsoon, which is around the corner. It has completed the work of desilting culverts under the rail tracks. The railways had sought the BMC’s help during the last meeting and the work was completed in 15 days.

There are close to 116 culverts in the city — 41 on Western Railway, 53 on Central Railway and 22 on Harbour line. Most of these are open nullahs which are easy to clean, but the challenge is removing silt and sediments from the closed ones, said civic officials.

There are 18 culverts under the tracks in the BMC’s jurisdiction — from CST station to Mulund on the central suburban railway line, and 15 of them were cleaned by the civic body. For these 15 culverts, the BMC used machines that pump out water in full force and clear the silt. However, these machines couldn’t reach three culverts, hence the railways has deployed manpower to clean them.

“The work at 15 places was done under the supervision of the BMC and the Railways. The work started on May 19 and was completed on June 4. The municipal corporation has fulfilled this additional responsibility,” said a civic official.
