The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to withdraw the water cut from Wednesday, as lakes have more than 81 per cent stock. Though the water stock increased sharply after the heavy spell in July, the administration was reluctant to withdraw the cut due to the forecast of a dry August.

The civic body fetched reserved stock from Upper Vaitarna in June without imposing water cuts. But as the stock declined below seven per cent and the rains were delayed, the BMC imposed a 10 per cent cut from July 1. Despite the heavy showers witnessed in July, the administration was reluctant to withdraw the water cut despite repeated demands from citizens and political parties.

There are seven lakes that supply water to the city. Two are within city limits (Tulsi and Vihar) while the Bhatsa, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna and Modak Sagar are on its outskirts. All have the combined capacity to store 14.47 lakh million litres of water. The combined stock is now 11.79 lakh million litres. If all the lakes remain full at the end of the monsoon, September 30, the city will have an uninterrupted water supply till next June.
