In the fiscal year 2016-17, the BMC initiated the Mumbai Sewage Improvement Program (MSIP), to transform the entire city into a sewage network. As of January 2017, the city already had a 1,915 km sewage network. Under the MSIP, the BMC plans to construct and expand a sewage network by 236.87 km, intending to connect the entire city with this system. This development encompasses both existing developed roads and planned roads yet to be developed.
“The corporation has undertaken the task of installing new sewers to enhance the existing network and extend connections to areas lacking sewage facilities. Challenges often arise during the execution of sewage disposal projects due to insufficient geotechnical analysis and alignment surveys,” said a BMC official.
Environmental activists such as D Stalin have slammed the BMC’s lazy approach to building the sewage network. “Due to BMC's carelessness, the beaches, and natural resources have been polluted. Tourists coming to Mumbai to visit the coast and beaches are greeted with a disheartening reality. The coast and seawater are polluted due to untreated sewage. BMC doesn't want to do anything to save the city.”
