A police constable in Gorai turned out to be a saviour for a man, whom he spotted crying for help after being bitten by a snake, while he was on his way to buy some essentials last Monday. Cop Yogesh Khedkar attached to Gorai police station saved the life of 36-year-old Surendra Kumar by rushing him to the hospital in time.

The day cyclone Tauktae hit the state, Khedkar was at his home in Manori, but he went out on his bike later in the day to get some essentials. That’s when he spotted Kumar crying for help, as a snake had bit him on one of his legs and hand too. He immediately rushed him to Stella Maris Hospital.

Speaking to mid-day, Khedkar said, “Kumar works in the same grocery shop from where I get my essentials. He was scared because of the snakebite but nobody was there to help him due to the cyclone. I took him to two to three clinics, but as they did not have anti-venom injections, they refused to admit him. Then I took him to Stella Maris Hospital, which is seven kilometres from Gorai, on my bike. He got discharged on Thursday, May 20, after undergoing treatment for two days.”

Kumar hails from Jaunpur district in Uttar Pradesh and has been working at a grocery store in Manori for the past six months. He was on his way to deliver some essentials when the incident happened.

Speaking to mid-day, Kumar said, “Due to the cyclone it was not possible to go on a bike, that’s why I was walking with the essentials. Suddenly the snake bit me in the foot, and when I tried to release my leg, it bit me in my hand. I was very scared and screaming for help when Khedkar came to my rescue. I owe my life to him.”

A hospital staff said, “We did not see much effect of the poison in his blood. We gave him three anti-venom injections that are usually used to treat snakebites. He recovered and got discharged today.”
