In Mumbai, 2,155 resident doctors of civic-run hospitals are eligible for Rs 1.21 lakh 'token' amount for their work during the pandemic. The state government had made the decision after resident doctors went on a strike demanding waiver of yearly fee last year.

The director of medical education and major hospitals has sent a proposal to the standing committee, mentioning that the 2,155 resident doctors eligible in the city are from KEM hospital (1,055), Sion hospital (604), Nair hospital (491) and Cooper hospital (5). They will receive Rs 1.21 lakh each, in two instalments, and it will cost the BMC Rs 26.07 lakh. The proposal will be tabled in the standing committee meeting on Friday.

Resident doctors had begun an indefinite strike across the state in October raising various demands, including a complete waiver of academic fees during the ongoing pandemic. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held a meeting with the protesting resident doctors. He then directed the civic administration and the state’s Medical Education Department to issue an order announcing Rs 1,21,000 each to the resident doctors who are treating Covid-19 patients in government and municipal medical colleges.
