A 17-year-old boy lost his life due to drowning in the Mahim area of Mumbai on Wednesday, civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.


The BMC received information about the tragic drowning incident on Wednesday around 1:50 pm. Following the report, “swift action was taken, and rescue teams, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, were immediately dispatched to the scene”. A search operation was launched in an attempt to locate the victim.


The incident occurred behind the Mukhdoom Sea Palace building near Mahim Dargah in Mahim West. The victim has been identified as Piyush Oberoi, according to the municipal authorities.


The boy was rescued and rushed to the Sion Hospital where he was declared dead by the doctors, the BMC said.

In another incident, the body of an unidentified man was found in the Gaimukh Creek here on Tuesday, a civic official told news agency PTI.

Chief of the disaster management cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation Yasin Tadvi told PTI that the body of a man in his early 50s was spotted in the water by a passer-by around 4 pm.

The fire brigade and RDMC team fished out the body and sent it to the government hospital for postmortem. Police are conducting further probe, Tadvi said.

Meanwhile, a 16-year-old teenager died due to drowning at Juhu beach in Mumbai during Ganpati visarjan (immersion).

The incident took place at Juhu Beach near Andheri West around 4.15 pm. The incident was reported by Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB).

"One person injured at Juhu Chowpatti was sent to civic-run Cooper Hospital," the BMC statement stated.

The deceased has been identified as Hasan Yusuf Shaikh (16).

"A male person was removed from seawater during Ganpati immersion duty by a lifeguard and was sent to RN Cooper hospital in an ambulance for medical treatment," a BMC official said.

As per Cooper Hospital's assistant medical officer, Dr Devidas Walke, the injured person was declared brought dead.
