Spots at Ghatkopar, Khar and Kandivli have got a cover of green net to control the spillage of debris and spreading of dust

In the wake of the worsening air quality in the Mumbai region, three city stations—Ghatkopar, Khar and Kandivli—where infrastructure upgrade work is underway have got green net cover. Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) which is handling these three key projects said on Thursday that special measures have been taken not just for Mumbai, but also for all other projects across the MMR. The green net, which is technically called scaffolding netting cloth, is used at construction sites, as these nets help in controlling the spillage of debris and the spreading of dust.

Sunil Udasi, chief public relations officer, MRVC, said that in Mumbai construction work is afoot at Khar, Kandivli and Ghatkopar. “At Ghatkopar, our plinth/ground work is over and most of the work is going on the deck level. We have removed all the debris from the site. We are already following water sprinkling procedures onsite mainly where the earthwork is being undertaken and also increase the frequency, if needed. Majorly, we reuse waste material for backfilling, however, all site supervisors of station building works and station improvement works, etc have been advised to dispose of waste
immediately," he said.
He said that they are ensuring the vehicles are PUC compliant and it is mandatory to wear masks and PPE suits for all the workers at the site. “We are also planning to keep one sensor-based air monitoring instrument at our major sites and issue directives to all contractors to monitor the health of diesel generator sets,” he said. Above all, excavation sites and sites frequented by the public such as station improvement work sites are barricaded, he said. “Though our major works of Virar-Dahanu and Panvel-Karjat project work do not come under BMC territory, we have resorted to mitigation measures, similar to other MRVC projects, after reviewing it from the environment point of view,” he said.
