Taki, a street dog who was missing for the past 23 days even as an animal lover announced a reward of Rs 25,000 to find her, was found dead in the passage of a bank in Fort on Saturday. Taki was allegedly also brutally beaten earlier which led to severe injuries to her legs, leaving her unable to walk properly. MRA Marg police have registered a case in the matter and are scanning CCTV footage from the area.

The complainant, Tanya D’Souza, 40, a resident of Colaba, said she found Taki around two years ago in Fort and had been taking care of her since. D’Souza, a writer, told mid-day, “Taki was found 2 years ago on the street after someone abandoned her. I took her to Fort area and fed her daily along with my friend Sneha Visaria who runs a charitable trust for animals. On December 21, someone hit Taki, injuring both her legs. She was not able to walk. We took her to a vet and got her treated. However, she went missing on December 23 from Horniman Circle.”

"We searched the area and informed other animal lovers too, but could not locate her. We also printed pamphlets with Taki’s photo and announced a reward of R25,000 for any information about her,” she added. D’Souza further said, “On January 15, I received a call from a bank security guard who said a dog’s body was found in a decomposed state in the passage area of the bank and that the dog had similarities to the dog in the photo in the pamphlets. I rushed there and identified Taki from her belt. I immediately informed the police who have registered a case. Cops, however, told me that it was impossible to get a postmortem done of the decomposed body.”

Sub-Inspector Rohit Rasam from MRA police station said, “We have registered a case in this matter. The dog was found in the passage of the bank which has a door. It could be that the dog went inside but was not able to come out owing to her injuries. We are investigating how the dog entered the bank and who had beaten her up earlier.”

Rs 25,000
Reward announced for any information on the dog
