The cycling menace on Matunga Z foot overbridge has come to an end, following a mid-day report on how the bridge, meant for walking commuters, was being used by speeding bicycles and food delivery boys. The bridge was permanently barricaded on Saturday. “An additional layer of barricading is also being done in the front of the barricades so that lifting and getting the bicycle on the bridge will be tougher,” Central Railway CPRO Shivaji Sutar said.

Matunga Z bridge, the popular rail footbridge between east and west Matunga, had become a menace with cyclists, food delivery boys speeding fast on it, inconveniencing regular commuters, who had sought that the railways put up strong barricades to discourage such usage. mid-day had highlighted the issue last week.

Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Shivaji Sutar said, “RPF Mumbai division got one joint survey done with the engineering department and identified black spots from where the entry of bicycles had been opened. The area has now been blocked with permanent barricading,”

“Also, as a deterrent, 15 bicycles were seized, and cases were registered. Two personnel have also been deployed for the next 10 days so that the barricades are not damaged. The RPF Matunga team and engineering department will keep watch in the future to curb such nuisance,” he said.

A permanent notice board will also be put up soon to warn users. The bridge also has very poor illumination in the night, leading to fear among commuters and safety issues, action on which will be initiated soon.

Commuters said the menace had increased in recent days. This is an easy crossover point between Central and Western Railway. But commuters complained that they could not walk peacefully on it since cyclists kept ringing and riding, and many, when objected, carried it alongside.
