After “no-exam” relief for students of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) due to the pandemic, it’s the turn of teachers now to stress over how they will declare the results. While there have been no instructions given yet on how to declare results for HSC, even as far as SSC results are concerned, teachers feel that the internal assessment pattern is too difficult to implement.

Considering the health hazards to students amid the pandemic, the Maharashtra state government has decided to cancel the traditional Board examinations. Instead of the regular exams, now SSC and HSC results will be declared based on internal assessments of students. But according to teachers, this is a very difficult task, especially with the great digital divide, as a huge part of the student population does not have access to the internet.

Unsure if it would be possible to declare Board results by July, Rajesh Pandya from the Teachers’ Democratic Front, said, “We welcome the government’s decision. It will ensure the welfare of not only students, but also teaching and non-teaching staff. But now, the major question in front of teachers and schools is how to collate internal assessment result of all students.”

Elaborating further, Pandya said, “Especially with online schooling throughout the academic year, there have been no tests or practical sessions, for teachers to score students for internal assessments.” Pandurang Kengar, Secretary of the Mumbai School Principals’ Association, added, “Moreover, all teachers are working from home currently. We have requested the CM to allow teachers to board local trains. In order to declare results by July, it is important for teachers to work from school.”
