Maharashtra, the Public Health Department said, reported 61 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, along with 70 patient discharges. Maharashtra's recovery rate was 98.17 per cent, with a case fatality rate of 1.81 per cent, stated a report in ANI.

According to the report, a total of 2,728 COVID tests were performed, including 1,439 initial RT-PCR tests and 1,305 RAT tests, for a daily positive rate of 2.23 per cent. Additionally, Maharashtra has recorded 250 cases of the JN.1 variant.

Notably, 682 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant of COVID-19 have been documented in 12 states throughout the country, with Maharashtra accounting for 139 of these. The states with the most cases are Karnataka (199), Kerala (148), and Goa (47), among others, the ANI report added.

According to reports, 1,339 samples underwent whole-genome sequencing (WGS) in December 2023, with an additional 665 samples analysed in January 2024, all gathered between November 10 and December 31, 2023. Home seclusion was used to treat the vast majority of patients.

The JN.1 variant, designated as a Variant of Interest (VOI) by the World Health Organisation (WHO), differs from its parent lineage, BA.2.86. However, the global health agency has emphasised that the present research suggests a minimal overall risk posed by JN.1, the ANI report further mentioned.

The national and state governments are actively monitoring the appearance and spread of the new Omicron subvariant, JN.

Meanwhile, India reported 605 new COVID-19 cases and four deaths in the last 24 hours. Active cases number 4,002, and the country's total COVID case count approaches 4.5 crore (4,50,18,792), the report stated.

According to the report, the death toll increased to 5,33,396, with two additional deaths reported in Kerala, one in Karnataka, and one in Tripura on the last day. On the recovery front, the number of people who recovered from the sickness rose to 4,44,81,341.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) reported 11,838 vaccination doses administered through January 7, based on data collated from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (National Centre for Disease Control), state media bulletins, and official websites as of 8 a.m. on January 4.
