Beed sees tight contest between BJP, NCP (SP); Cong stages comeback after decade in Latur

The BJP has lost three out of four Lok Sabha constituencies it held in the Marathwada region, which sends a total of eight MPs to Parliament, according to data available at 9 pm. Maratha reservation, Muslim voters opting for its rivals and agrarian issues may have impacted the saffron party.
Congress, which drew a blank here in 2019, bagged three seats—Nanded, Jalna and Latur—while Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray proved his mettle, securing the Osmanabad, Hingoli and Parbhani seats. After the split in the party, sitting MP Omprakash Rajenimbalkar (Osmanabad) and Sanjay Patil (Parbhani) sided with Thackeray. While Hingoli MP Hemant Patil, however, joined the Eknath Shinde-led faction. In the 2019 election while BJP and undivided Shiv Sena won seven constituencies.

BJP’s Pankaja Munde, lost Beed to NCP(SP)'s Bajrang Sonawane
This time, five-time BJP MP and minister of state in the Union government Raosaheb Danve lost the poll from Jalna. Despite former CM Ashok Chavan joining the BJP, the party lost his stronghold Nanded. Pankaja Munde, the only BJP candidate in Marathwada, was in a close contest with the NCP (SP) candidate
in Beed.
Osmanabad
Uddhav Thackeray’s favourite Omprakash Rajenimbalkar has won this constituency once again. He defeated Archana Patil of the NCP. Patil is a rival of the Rajenimbalkar family. In the 2019 election, Rajenimbalkar defeated her husband Ranajagjitsinha Patil, who contested the poll on an NCP ticket. After the Sena split, Rajenimbalkar sided with Thackeray.
“I was elected earlier [in 2019] not in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi but those of Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray and party chief Uddhav Thackeray. This election has proved this,” he said.

Hingoli
After the Shiv Sena split, the party’s Hingoli MP Hemant Patil joined the Shinde Sena. In the Lok Sabha constituency, five out of the six MLAs belong to the Mahayuti. Yet, UBT candidate Nagesh Patil won the election, recording a handsome tally.
He defeated Baburao Kadam Kohalikar of the rival Sena. Sitting MP Hemant Patil was originally to be the Shinde Sena candidate, but after strong opposition from the local BJP unit, the chief minister replaced him.

Nanded
Surprisingly, BJP MP Prataprao Chikhalikar Patil lost this seat, considered one of the safest in Maharashtra, to the Congress’s Vasantrao Chavan Patil. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had held a rally in Nanded constituency after former chief minister Ashok Chavan joined the BJP just before the Lok Sabha election. The Maratha community and farmers made their displeasure evident by opting for the Congress.

Vasantrao Chavan Patil (Congress) - 5.25 lakh, Prataprao Chikhalikar-Patil (BJP) - 4.66 lakh
2019 election: Prataprao Chikhalikar- Patil (BJP) - 4.86 lakh, Ashok Chavan (Cong) - 4.46 lakh
Parbhani
This constituency has been with the Shiv Sena since 1999. Sanjay Jadhav, the incumbent MP, took Thackeray’s side after the split in the party. In the 1960s and 1970s, Shivajirao Deshmukh of Congress won three Lok Sabha elections from Parbhani. Since 1999, the Shiv Sena has ruled this constituency 6 times. Jadhav defeated Mahadev Jankar, a Mahayuti partner and the Rashtriya Samaj Party chief.

Beed
Pankaja Munde, former minister and daughter of BJP stalwart Gopinath Munde could not retain her home constituency Beed after a close contest with NCP (SP) candidate Bajrang Sonwane. Pankaja is the third member of her family to represent Beed. Her father Gopinath Munde was its MP from 2009 until he died in 2014 after which her sister Pritam stepped into his shoes. Ever since Pankaja Munde was announced as the BJP candidate, she has been facing opposition from the Maratha and Dhangar communities.

2019 election: Pritam Munde (BJP) - 6.78 lakh, Bajrang Sonwane (NCP) - 5.09 lakh
Aurangabad
Shiv Sena’s Sandipanrao Bhumre, the guardian minister of Aurangabad, but an outsider to the electorate, emerged the winner here. Bhumre a five-time MLA’s Assembly segment, Paithan is part of Aurangabad district but is included in the Jalna constituency. Due to this, the opposition painted him as an outsider. However, he defeated Imtiaz Jaleel, AIMIM’s sole MP in the region, while UBT’s six-time former MP Chandrakant Khaire came third.

Sandipanrao Bhumre (Shiv Sena) - 4.37 lakh , Imtiaz Jaleel (AIMIM) - 3.40 lakh

Jalna
Five-time MP and minister of the state Raosaheb Danve of the BJP has lost to his arch-rival Dr Kalyan Kale. The ire of the Maratha community over the reservation issue likely played a role. Dr Kale also received support from Muslim voters. Danve defeated Dr Kale—a two-time former MLA, in the 2009 election.

Latur
Congress has returned to power in Latur after a decade, with its candidate Dr Shivajirao Kalge trouncing sitting BJP MP Sudhakar Shrangare. This constituency is home pitch of the late chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and former Union home minister Shivraj Patil, represented the seat seven times between 1980 and 1999.
