The Maharashtra government has decided to launch an initiative which would help promote the Marathi language by giving non-Maharashtrian taxi drivers, hawkers and labourers in the city Marathi lessons.

The first phase of this initiative will begin for May 1 in which 5,000 taxi drivers, hawkers and labourers will be taught Marathi in a year, reported Hindustan Times.
Different areas of the city will be identified for the classes and the state government will reach the potential learners via transport department, local corporators in different civic wards, and Brihanmumbai Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
Also, the potential learners can themselves register for the classes.
“We are aiming to provide learning resources, especially among the non-Maharashtrian population as they are willing to learn. They are a part of the city and we are attempting to reach out to them. We will provide online resources as well,” said Prajakta Lavangare Verma, secretary, Marathi Bhasha department of state government.
