The Maharashtra govt has issued a set of guidelines to observe Muharram in the state. In a circular released last week, the government has disallowed large processions and gatherings, like last year.

Here is the list of guidelines:

  •  The state government announced that mourning processions will not be allowed this year in line with the Covid-19 curbs imposed on social and religious gatherings by the Centre and state governments.
  • To adhere to the Covid-19 norms people who live in societies should not congregate to observe the day, instead, should attend cultural/social gatherings (Majlis) online.
  • The permission of the local administration is mandatory to set up Chhabils (stalls). Only sealed water bottles should be distributed from the Chhabils. Social distancing and public hygiene must be followed.
  • The notice also announced that, this year, permission will not be given to take out Tazia. And not more than 4 people will be allowed for any programmes.

Muharram is observed by Muslims to mourn the death of Hazrat Imam Hussain, in the battle of Karbala, in the seventh century.
