Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to promptly install protective barriers in Chembur, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, and other potential flood-prone areas of suburban Mumbai.

This directive comes in response to the possible threat of flooding due to heavy rainfall or other potential hazards in these regions.

In a meeting held at the ministry today, Pawar emphasized the need for a quick action plan to protect the residents living in areas prone to potential flooding. The financial assistance received from the Central Government for disaster prevention will be utilized for these expenses, and the reimbursement process will be handled by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Pawar said.

The meeting, chaired by Ajit Pawar, was also attended by Additional Chief Secretary of the Housing Department, Valsa Nayar, Additional Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Ashwini Bhide, Principal Secretary of the Planning Department, Saurabh Vijay, and Secretary of the Finance Department (Financial Reforms), Shaila E., as well as the Director of Disaster Management, Appasaheb Dhulaji.

Pawar said that several areas in Chembur, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, and others are at risk of potential flooding. To ensure the safety of citizens in these vulnerable locations and prevent any loss of life or financial damage, it is essential to implement protective measures promptly. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has been instructed to prioritize the action plan and install protective barriers as soon as possible.

Pawar also highlighted the importance of thorough inspections in areas susceptible to potential threats. The State Disaster Management Department, through IIT Mumbai, has prepared a list of such areas, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will coordinate with them to implement the necessary protective measures.
