Thanks to 40-minute procedure, girl did not have to undergo major surgery
The child accidentally swallowed the magnet on December 22
There have many incidents of children swallowing pins, coins and batteries. In one such case, a four-year-old girl accidentally ingested a magnet. When the item didn’t come out even after a week, a colonoscopy was performed at Bombay hospital to remove it.

On December 22, Navya Shah (name changed), a Vasai resident was playing with a toy that had a magnet in it. While sucking on the toy, she accidentally swallowed a magnet. After informing her parents, she was taken to a local doctor.
The latter advised them to wait a while so that the magnet could be excreted, but it apparently moved to another part of her body. After this, the doctor stated that the child might be required to undergo surgery. Navya’s parents then approached Bombay hospital on December 29.
Dr Gajanan Rodge, the gastroenterologist who performed the procedure, said, “The magnet was stuck in the junction of the large and small intestine. Usually, when a foreign object gets stuck above the abdomen, it is removed through an endoscopy, but in this case, it had passed through the upper intestine. So it was not reachable via endoscopy. After that, we planned to do a colonoscopy, which is a slightly painful procedure compared to an endoscopy. So, the child was given anaesthesia before the procedure was performed. It took around 40 minutes and we safely removed the magnet with the help of a basket. The child was saved from undergoing major surgery due to this technique. Her mother burst into tears after seeing the magnet out of her body.”

He added, “Parents should be cautious if they have a small child, and if such an accident takes place, they must visit a specialist without wasting time.” The patient was discharged on December 31.
