In a tragic incident, a lift collapsed from the 40th floor of Siddhajyoti building in Grant Road, leading to the death of a 43-year-old man and causing injuries to a 26-year-old. Both of them were repairing the lift when the accident took place, said eyewitnesses.

Deven Dani, chairman of the building, said, “The lift had not been working since the past 2 days. We have given a contract to City Lift India to look after repairs and maintenance work since 2008. At the time of the incident, the lift was on the 40th floor which is the top floor, and two staffers—Anubhav Tripathi, 26, and Suryakant Pujari, 43—were on top of the lift. Around 4.20 pm we heard a loud sound and saw the lift collapse.” He added, “We immediately remove both of them. Anubhav was conscious but had severe head injury and Suryakant was unconscious. I am not sure but I think the rope broke.”

As per the civic disaster management cell, Tripathi has been admitted to HN Reliance Hospital and his condition is stable while Pujari was declared dead by Dr Sourabh Kadam at Sir JJ Hospital.  “It is an unfortunate incident and we are going to help the family. Though it is not our fault, someone did lose life in our premises,” said Dani. Fire Brigade and police officials have inspected the spot while PWD will be carrying out further probe into what led to the collapse.
