Kalwa bridge deadline pushed back, again

The incomplete Kalwa road bridge

Mumbai's lifeline—local train—along with lakhs of commuters along Central Railway will continue to suffer for some more time as the work on Kalwa road bridge has been halted due to pending finishing and signage works by the Thane Municipal Corporation. Following a review by Member of Parliament Dr Shrikant Shinde, a new deadline of December 2021 has now been set for the completion of the works.

As the bridge is still incomplete, the railways have been unable to close the level crossing gate that detains the maximum number of trains on the main slow line. It has also affected the new fifth and sixth lines that are being built.

At the review meeting, a decision has been taken to complete the works on a priority basis and throw open the road bridge.

The road bridge at Kalwa over the Kharigaon level crossing, which is already delayed by 12 years, was initially expected to complete by May 2021 as per the deadline of TMC, but was later postponed to November 2021 as the local civic body was low on funds and finishing works were pending. The cost of the bridge is Rs 30 crore.
