Installation of CCTVs in private premises mandatory: Mumbai Police

DCP Chaitanya S noted that while many establishments had CCTVs before, they were inside the premises which restricted its field of view and the activities on road were not visible.

Mumbai police has made the installation of CCTVs in private premises mandatory under Criminal Procedure Code 144. Besides, the cameras have to be installed in a way that covers the entire area from the boundary of the premises.


As per a Times of India report, police chief Parambir Singh said that 6,000 cameras were installed, another 5,000 will be installed by the state home department.


In light of the notification, Singh expects over 1 lakh CCTVs to be installed in private establishments of the city. “We have already issued the notification. We expect that private establishments will install CCTVs in a time-bound period,” Singh told TOI.


DCP Chaitanya S noted that while many establishments had CCTVs before, they were inside the premises which restricted its field of view and the activities on road were not visible. With new notification, private property owners will have to install camera in a way that would cover the entire area.
