The Commissioner of Police Vivek Phansankar on Monday suggested that a law be passed to ensure the elderly are taken care of by their children. He also expressed concerns about the “influence of Western culture on Indian society, which has led to the isolation of senior citizens by their children.”

Local elders were felicitated by the DB Marg police station on the occasion of World Senior Citizen’s Day. Apart from the police commissioner, other senior officials such as Special Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner (Law and Order) Satyanarayan Chaudhary, Additional CP Abhinav Deshmukh, DCP Mohit Kumar Garg, ACP Ravi Sardesai were present at the event.

Addressing attendees, Bharti observed that the number of senior citizens is increasing day by day. “They remind us of our duty as you [senior citizens] call us after 10 pm if there are loud noises in nearby areas,” he said. He added that the elderly must not hesitate to call the police when in distress.

Stating that western culture had ushered in the concept of nuclear families and hence senior citizens are isolated in their homes, Phansankar said, “We are always there for you. I would like to reassure you that the Mumbai Police is always there for you, when in distress please do not hesitate to contact us.” The senior citizens in attendance expressed their trust in the Mumbai Police and thanked them for their service.
