The plateauing pattern of the pandemic continued on Friday, with the state reporting 2,628 new infections and the figures for Mumbai staying below 500. Since the beginning of the COVID outbreak, Maharashtra has so far seen 20.38 lakh cases. Government data showed 40 people died in the 24 hours up to Friday evening in all districts of the state, led by Pune, with nine deaths and five deaths in Yavatmal.

The fresh numbers have pushed the overall fatalities to 51,255. In Mumbai, the virus felled four people, while it claimed the lives of seven more patients in other parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Of the deaths in the city, three victims had other ailments and three were senior citizens, said BMC officials.


With the latest deaths, the overall toll in the city has risen to 11,382, officials said. According to the corporation’s data, 302 patients were discharged from various treatment facilities, taking the count of recoveries to 2,93,118.

Despite apprehensions about a surge in cases following access to local trains for all, COVID-19 spread in Mumbai appears to be under control. The city saw 415 new cases on Friday, while fresh infections in other MMR were 89, 87 and 71 in Thane, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan Dombivali respectively. 

The state’s recovery rate now stands at 95.71 per cent, with 3,513 patients discharged across Maharashtra in the 24-hour window. Mumbai’s recovery rate is a tab lower at 94 per cent. The doubling rate in the city has touched 550 days.

Mumbai’s daily growth rate in the last one week is just 0.13 per cent as the total count, which is 3.11 lakh cases. The city had 5,597 active cases as of Friday evening. 

State mortality at 2.52%
The latest mortality rate for Maharashtra stands at 2.52 per cent, with 51,255 COVID-related fatalities across the state. 

The number of deaths due to other causes in the state was 1,252. These deaths are the cases where patients had contracted the virus before testing negative but later died due to other complications. 

The state has so far put 1.48 crore samples to laboratory tests out of which 20.38 lakh have been found positive, taking the positivity ratio to 13.7 per cent.
