Covid-19: Mumbai sees fall in both fresh case numbers and TPR

After witnessing a steady rise in daily Covid-19 numbers last week, Mumbai saw a drop in both daily positive figures as well as the test positivity rate for the third consecutive day on Monday. As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) report, the city saw 728 new Covid-19 cases, a marginal drop compared to Sunday. The city reported 28 deaths on Monday, slightly higher than the fatalities on Sunday.


After recording the lowest daily Covid-19 numbers in the second wave on June 3, Mumbai saw a rise in Covid cases earlier this week but the numbers remained below the 1,000 mark. The city however recorded a new low in test positivity rate (TPR) in the second wave so far. The TPR was 2.59%. Sunday was for the first time in the second wave that the TPR dipped below 3 and was 2.96%.



The city reported the highest number of cases - 11,163 on April 4 - and then the declining trend started. There has been a steady fall in the test positivity rate after May 5 when the TPR was 10.96%. The doubling rate has continued to significantly improve and is now at 550 days.


Of the 28 deaths in Mumbai, 22 patients had comorbidities, 17 deaths were in the age group of 60 above while 11 deaths were reported in the 40-60 age group. The city’s recovery rate has improved and was 95 per cent on Monday and there were 980 people who recovered and were discharged.

Maharashtra saw a significant dip in new cases on Monday. As per the state report, 10,219 new cases were reported in Maharashtra. It also saw a significant drop in Covid-19 fatalities as there were 154 deaths reported across the state on Monday.

The state’s case fatality rate has been seeing a steady rise and on Wednesday was 1.72%. At least 21,081 people recovered and got discharged on Monday. Currently, the state has 1.74 lakh active cases.  

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) reported a significant dip in new cases, at 1,893 on Monday, including the ones reported in Mumbai. Apart from Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivili with 125 and Raigad with 393 reported the maximum new cases in MMR region. Thane had 114 new cases while Panvel reported 114 new cases on Monday and Navi Mumbai reported 68 new cases. MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered a significant drop in deaths and there were 8 deaths on Monday.  Navi Mumbai and Panvel reported 3 deaths each and Raigad reported 2 deaths.
