Covid-19: Mumbai’s test positivity rate drops further to 1.76 per cent

The daily figure of novel Coronavirus rose on Tuesday, but marginally, to 570 cases from 521 the day before, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) report. New Covid-19 fatalities also rose slightly, with the civic body confirming  10 deaths.

At 1.76 per cent, Mumbai on Tuesday recorded the lowest test positivity rate (TPR) of the second Covid-19 wave. The TPR had dropped below 2 per cent on Monday, a little over two weeks after it fell under 3 per cent.


The daily figure of novel Coronavirus rose on Tuesday, but marginally, to 570 cases from 521 the day before, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) report. New Covid-19 fatalities also rose slightly, with the civic body confirming  10 deaths.


The city reported the highest number of cases during the second wave on April 4 [11,163] and since then the daily infections have been on the downward trend with some fluctuations. The TPR was the highest on May 5 at 10.96 per cent.  


Doubling rate at 722 days

On Tuesday, the doubling rate of Covid-19 cases marginally improved to 722 days. Of the 10 deaths confirmed by the BMC, six patients had comorbidities, one was in the 40-59 years age group and eight were senior citizens. In the second wave, the daily fatalities had come down to single digit for the first time on June 8.
The city’s recovery rate continued to be at 95 per cent on Tuesday, when a total of 742 people were discharged. 

State’s daily toll jumps to 188

Maharashtra recorded a significant rise in Covid-19 fatalities and new cases on Tuesday. According to the state health department report, while cases rose to 8,470 from 6,270 on Monday, deaths jumped massively to 188 from 94. But the case fatality rate in the state remained constant at 1.98 per cent. 

As on Tuesday, the state had 1.23 lakh active cases after the recovery and discharge of 9,043 patients.  

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) also saw a rise in new cases at 1,784, including the infections reported in Mumbai. Palghar and Raigad once again reported the maximum number of new cases in the MMR after Mumbai, at 135 and 512, respectively. Thane reported 107 new cases, Kalyan-Dombivli 74 cases and Navi Mumbai 102.
 
The MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered 23 Covid-19 fatalities. Raigad reported five deaths and Panvel six. Palghar and Kalyan-Dombivli reported four deaths each.
