While city sees 363 fresh cases, state records a marginal rise at 6,126

For the second consecutive day, Mumbai saw a marginal rise in fresh Covid-19 cases, which crossed the 300 mark. While the city recorded 363 cases, compared to Tuesday it saw a three-fold rise in fatalities at nine. The city’s test positivity rate (TPR) saw a marginal rise on Wednesday and went above 1 per cent.

The TPR registered on Wednesday was 1.06 per cent, which was the TPR on July 29 as well. For the first time in the second wave, Mumbai’s TPR dipped below 1 per cent on July 29.
After registering a TPR of above 2 per cent on June 27, the city’s TPR remained below that. The city reported the highest number of cases — 11,163 — on April 4 and then the decline started. There has been a steady fall in the TPR after May 5. The doubling rate improved and was 1,595 days on Wednesday. Of the nine deaths, seven patients had comorbidities, four deaths were of patients above 60 years of age and five of those between 40 and 60 years. The city’s recovery rate remained constant at 97 per cent and 438 people were discharged after full recovery on Wednesday.
After recording a significant dip in new cases and Covid-19 fatalities on Monday, the state saw a rise for the second consecutive day as 6,126 cases were reported. Maharashtra also reported 195 deaths, marginally higher than Tuesday’s figure. The state’s case fatality rate remained constant at 2.1 per cent as 7,436 people were discharged after full recovery. The state has 72,810 active cases.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) saw a marginal rise for the second consecutive day but the number of new cases remained below 1,000 on Wednesday. As per the state report, 952 cases were reported in the MMR region. Apart from Mumbai, Raigad saw 177 new cases in the MMR followed by Navi Mumbai with 75 cases. Panvel reported 73 new cases while Thane saw 56 cases and Vasai-Virar 31. The MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered 18 Covid-19 fatalities on Wednesday. Raigad reported 14 deaths, highest in the MMR. Navi Mumbai saw three deaths and Vasai-Virar reported one.
70% vaccines reserved for second doses
As more than 12 lakh citizens are eligible for their second vaccine dose this month, the BMC has decided that 30 per cent of the doses it has received will be reserved for those taking the first shot while 70 per cent for those taking the second one. The civic body has got a total of 1.5 lakh doses, out of which 57,000 are Covishield and 48,000 Covaxin. The vaccination drive will resume today. Meanwhile, a total of 314 public vaccination centres are currently functioning and the corporation has started the walk-in facility as well. Apart from these, centres at civic hospitals and jumbo Covid centres will continue to operate as per the prevailing system i.e. 50 per cent online registrations and 50 per cent walk-ins for vaccination.
