Officials attribute the jump in the number of fresh infections in the city to increase in testing; state confirms 70 more casualties

Mumbai on Wednesday registered a spike in COVID-19 cases, which the officials attributed to an increase in testing to detect the novel Coronavirus. State health officials confirmed 3,556 fresh infections across Maharashtra, including more than 600 in the city.

On Wednesday, more than 15,000 tests for detection for COVID-19 were conducted across the city, way above the average of 13,000 over the past few days. This led to an increase in daily fresh cases to 675 from 473 on Tuesday.
The number of daily deaths also increased in the state, with officials confirming 70 COVID-19 casualties on Wednesday, including eight from the city. Mumbai has been recording deaths in single digit for the past few days. Out of the eight deceased COVID-19 patients, four had co comorbidities while three were aged between 40 to 60 and five were 60-plus.
TMC records cases in three digits
Of the 3,556 new cases, one-third, i.e. 1,247, were reported from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including Mumbai. Besides Mumbai, the Thane Municipal Corporation with 121 fresh cases and Kalyan-Dombivli with 115 were the only two other areas reporting infections in three digits within the MMR.
Pune records 12 new deaths
The number of deaths in the interior parts of the state increased slightly, with the Pune circle and Nagpur circle registering 12 deaths each. The cumulative number of cases in the state is more than 19.78 lakh and the recovery rate has stabilised at 94.8 per cent. Across the state, about 52,000 COVID-19 patients are currently undergoing treatment, including 7,525 in the city.
