Covid-19 cases jump 27 per cent in Mumbai; TPR close to 17 per cent

Mumbai recorded a 27 per cent rise in daily COVID-19 cases, with the BMC confirming 8,063 new ones on Sunday. The test positivity rate further increased to 17 per cent. The state-wide Coronavirus tally rose to 11,877 cases. 


Of the 8,063 newly confirmed COVID-19 patients, 7,176 (89 per cent) were asymptomatic, while 503 were hospitalised, of which 56 are on oxygen support, according to the BMC. 



A total of 47,410 tests were conducted on Sunday. The active cases rose to 29,819.

On Saturday, the city had registered 6,347 cases with a TPR of 13 per cent. On December 30, the city had registered 3,671 cases, which doubled within the next three days.

The city’s recovery rate dropped by three per cent to 94 per cent, and 578 people recovered and were discharged on Sunday. The doubling rate continues to see a drop and was 183 days.

‘Be extremely cautious’

“There is no reason to panic. But at the same time, all of us have to be extremely cautious and exercise COVID-appropriate behaviour. Mask is mandatory in public and citizens should refrain from going to crowded places,” said BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal.

The state reported nine COVID-19 casualties, and none of them were from Mumbai. The state’s case fatality rate remained almost constant at 2.11 per cent, and 2,069 were discharged on Sunday. Currently, the state has 42,024 active cases.

MMR croses 10,000-mark

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region crossed (MMR) the 10,000-mark, with Thane, Navi Mumbai and Mira Bhayandar registering a sharp spike in daily cases. Both the MMR and the Pune circle combined contributed to 95 per cent of the state’s tally on Sunday. Of the 11,877 cases recorded across Maharashtra, the MMR reported 10,394, including the ones from Mumbai, and the Pune circle 931.

Thane rewported 617 cases, Navi Mumbai 559, Mira Bhayandar 311, Vasai-Virar 261, Kalyan-Dombivli 260, Raigad 128 and Panvel 198. The MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered one death from Navi Mumbai.
