The management of solid waste remains a critical issue for Mumbai. Now the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is looking to develop a roadmap for the next 10 years to solve the issue, with peoples' participation.

The BMC is conducting a survey on the current situation of solid waste management and seeks citizen's opinions on the proposed reforms under ‘Vision 2030’. An online meeting to discuss the roadmap will be held today (August 27).
The city throws around 6,500 metric tons of garbage on dumping grounds every day. The lifespan of the dumping grounds is over and the corporation is still trying to find the best solution for their scientific closure. Despite launching many initiatives like segregation of dry and wet waste, composting of wet waste, separate units for big societies and commercial establishments, the city scored poorly on waste management. “Now, under Vision 2030, the corporation is thinking of developing a roadmap for the next 10 years by assessing existing status and processes in SWM, understanding the current perception of citizens, and executing pilot activities,” said an official from the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department.
Citizens can participate
Under the initiative, the corporation will ask citizens to post their opinions on https://bmc-survey.netlify.app/. The survey will find the perceptions of people about cleaning Mumbai, their ratings to various services of SWM departments like street sweeping, waste collection, maintenance of public toilets, etc. It will also seek citizen’s ideas to make the city cleaner, whether they are ready to segregate dry and wet waste at their homes, what kind of support they will need from the corporation for this, etc. The survey will give an idea of people's perspectives as well as get them to participate in the management of waste.
