BPCL handed over some machinery to the civic officials on Thursday

In the next one and a half months, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will get a jumbo medical grade oxygen bottling plant at Mahul Road. Some of the machinery for the project was given by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited on Thursday. The plant will be of immense importance in case the third wave of COVID hits the city, said officials.

Once operational, the plant in M-West ward will fill medical oxygen in 60 cylinders, with a capacity of 7 cubic metres, in one hour. At this rate, nearly 500 jumbo cylinders can be filled in an 8-hour session.

The BPCL’s Mumbai refinery has facilities to produce about 72 MT of medical oxygen per day. Of this, about 10 to 15 metric tons of medical oxygen will be available for filling medical oxygen cylinders.

For the Rs 11-crore project, the BMC has bought equipment like 2 compressors, 1 buffer vessel and 4 skids. BPCL too has contributed machinery worth Rs 4 crore for the project. In addition, BPCL has laid a 1.5-km-long pipeline that will connect its medical oxygen production unit and the jumbo cylinder recharge plant, the corporation said in a press release.

“The project will be operational as soon as the PESO Certification is received. The project to fill the medical oxygen jumbo cylinders at Mahul will be valuable [in tackling COVID],”  said Additional Municipal Commissioner (Project) P Velarasu.
