In a bid to alleviate floodwater woes of Mumbaikars during monsoon, the BMC has proposed to add another rescue machine to its arsenal. A Quick Response Vehicle equipped with dewatering pumps, jetting system and other useful tools will give immediate response to various types of complaints, from stormwater drains to nullahs, across the city.

There are at least 121 flooding spots in the city which are yet to be tackled. Of these, 43 are under various authorities and private owners and need coordination with the civic body.

Waterlogging and flooding have been long-standing problems in Mumbai during monsoon when heavy pour meets high tide. “Though BMC has already taken various measures such as stationery dewatering pumps, now it is thinking of procuring a vehicle with all the equipment to tackle any stormwater drain issue. It will be useful even during non-rainy days,” said an official from the BMC.

BMC chief I S Chahal, in the budget estimate of 2022-23, said the vehicle will also have a rodding system, CCTV camera, metal detector, concrete breaker, emergency lights, blower system, lifting arrangements and other useful tools. There are 386 chronic flooding spots in the city and various works have been completed to tackle 265 of these. Work at 53 such spots has started and it is expected to be completed before the onset of monsoon 2022.
